ThisIsFootball.Africa continued our conversation with the legend that is Andre Arendse. Listen as he tells who were the craziest and funniest players he played with and why he started losing his hair.
Mark Fish is the craziest player that Arendse played with. Fish started out at Jomo Cosmos, left for Orlando Pirates and from there competed in Italy with Lazio and in the EPL with Bolton, Charlton Athletic and Ipswich. Fish was one of the few players who played both in the Serie A, the Premier League, and won the AFCON with the legendary 1996 team.
“Mark Fish will go down in history as the craziest player I’ve ever played with simply because, even though he was a defender, he would be the first to bomb forward in attack. Never even thinking about potential possession turnovers. He used to force me into a panic whenever he went on these unscheduled forward runs. He is the reason I started losing my hair at an early age. “
The late Zizwe Motaung, another defender that ran out for Sundowns, Pirates and Chiefs. The attacking right back also had stints in Switzerland with St Gallen and in Spain with CD Tenerife, who at the time were a decent team in La Liga. Zizwe also started his career at Jomo Cosmos, as well as being another 1996 AFCON winner.
” The funniest player would go to the late Sizwe Motaung. No matter how down we felt after a loss or a bad game, he would be the one to lift us with jokes and songs. When one tune, one note came out of his mouth, then the spirit throughout the team would be high again.”
