Banyana Captain Van Wyk on Motlhalo’s Overseas Move

Linda Motlhalo in the Women's African Cup of Nations, Banyana

Glasgow City has announced the signing of Bayana Banyana and Women African Cup of Nations winner Linda Motlhalo to their team on Monday, 23 January 2023. Motlhalo left Swedish side Djurgarden after her three-year contract expired in November 2022.

Banyana Banyana captain and former Glasgow City player Janine Van Wyk believes the move to the Scottish league will be fantastic for Motlhalo. Van Wyk used to ply her trade at Glasgow City and reckons this is a perfect move for her Banyana Banyana teammate.

“I think it is a fantastic move for Linda to feature in the Scottish League. She will no doubt be one of the top players in the league. Glasgow City takes good care of its players and I know she will enjoy her football at the club. I have worked with many of the players and staff during my time with them and they are really welcoming people with a good sense of professional football mentality,” Van Wyk told ThisIsFootball.Africa.

“I have watched Linda grow as a footballer and I always said that she would be the rising star of South African women’s football with the talent and humility she carries. I wish her all the best and I know she will shine bright in Glasgow”.

The Women Cup of Nations [WAFCON] winner Motlhalo was phenomenal for Banyana Banyana in the WAFCON tournament and Van Wyk has greatly complemented Motlhalo’s influence on the national team.

“Well, she was, is a young player herself that has set the benchmark for all young players around her. Linda came in as a very young player and showcased her abilities from the get-go, so I believe if others can follow in her footsteps, they would probably have the same opportunities as what Linda currently has,” Van Wyk added.
