Another Mwaruwari star is on the rise, after Benjani’s son signed his first professional contract in England.
Benjani Jnr, the speedy and gifted 17-year-old son of former Jomo Cosmos, Manchester City, Auxerre and Portsmouth hitman, has joined Yeovil Town as a pro after an impressive season.
The Yeovil Town website described Benjani Jnr as: “Having been something of a goal machine for the young Glovers last season, and in the early part of this season, he has signed on to become the team’s third professional player in three years to come from within”.
The younger Mwaruwari has already represented the English fifth tier first team in the 2021-22 Somerset Premier Cup, and is now aiming to cement his place in the coming fixtures. The rising starlet has been a major hit since making the switch from Portsmouth FC, the club that brought his father to the English Premiership.
He was offered the professional contract after he scored 25 goals and bagged 16 assists in 30 games for the Yeovil Under 18s.
The club’s official website said: “Yeovil Town are delighted to announce that Benjani Jnr has signed professional terms with the Club. Arriving from Portsmouth in January 2020, the youngster made an instant impression, playing up a year group in the EFL Youth Alliance League.”
Although he still has some way to go before he reaches the dizzy heights of his father’s illustrious career, Yeovil believe that their young gem is on the right track.
“Following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a professional footballer for the likes of Manchester City, Portsmouth & Auxerre, Benjani Jr now makes his first steps in the professional game,” said the club.
