Cape Town City have been busy in the transfer market losing Craig Martin to Orlando Pirates and with Sundowns circling for striker Khanyisa Mayo. Now the club has announced the signing of forward Juan Camilo Zapata from Colombia.
The 28-year-old striker arrives with a glittering goal record. Something that has glaringly been missing in the Citizens armour this season. Zapata scored 19 goals in 35 games for Colmenarez in Liga de Fútbol Profesional Venezolano(Venezuela) in all competitions so far.
The Citizens have also claimed that the former Boyaca Chico(2nd Tier in Colombia) player has become the club’s record transfer.
Zapata virtually single handily carried his club in Venezuela from the second division to their first ever promotion and then to the Copa Sudamericana in just two seasons. The Colombian is a prolific scorer with creativity and with a proper work ethic. Recently Zapata went through a spell without a professional club for a year, playing for a lot of different amateur clubs, just trying to make cash to support his family. Then fortunes changes for Zapata when he went from being clubless to being the top goal scorer in the pro Venezuelan league for three years in a row.
Meanwhile, Zapata could make his Cape Town City debut against Orlando Pirates on the 7th of January at the DHL Stadium. But will this attack contain Mayo? Yesterday we reported that the Mayo-Downs deal not happening but could this open the door to talks, will a transfer be made to pay for the new record signing?
