Kaizer Chiefs is rumoured to be interested in former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sibusisi Vilakazi who has just left TS Galaxy after only featuring 10 times on the field of play.
The creative midfielder comes with a wealth of experience, is a born winner and would come on board as a free agent as well as with five league titles under his name whilst at Masandawana.
Having failed to convince Stellenbosch to part ways with their most prized asset Junior Mendieta on deadline day, as well as turning down CapeTown City terms regarding Mdudzi Mdantsane , Amakhosi are forced to look at free agents who can play between the lines, in areas occupied by the number 10 role.
Currently there is a reliance on either Nkosingiphile Ncgobo or Mduduzi Shabalala who are more than capable of playing in those spaces, both are young and exciting prospects but someone of Sibusiso Vilakazi’s pedigree would bring calmness and could easily guide these two into being better players.
But Chiefs will have to move quickly as the likes of Gavin Hunt’s SuperSport United and his connection with Vila could put them as the frontrunners. But AmaZulu, Cape Town City and Maritzburg United may enter into the race for his signature as well. Sibusiso has got 32 Bafana Bafana national team caps, scoring five goals while on duty.
On the other side, he is 33 years old already, having only played 26 games over the last three seasons and scoring one goal in that entire period. Also dealing with a couple of injuries whilst at Chloorkop, Arthur Zwane may feel that in the twilight of his career, the player most likely won’t form part of the club’s long-term plan.
What would be the purpose of roping him in at this stage of his journey, and will the Glamour Boys be getting the Vilakazi that won the PSL Player of the Year, or the one that was deemed not good enough at Galaxy? On the other hand his experience and ability could be the missing link Chiefs are looking for. Time will tell.
