News reaching our desk is that Chiefs fan favourite goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, is set to get a new contract extension by one year despite being on the wrong side of 30 and not holding a starting position under head coach Arthur Zwane.
“When it comes to Itu and Kwinika, as I said earlier on, I said we have been playing very well and unfortunately when you look at the goals that we conceded, they were individual errors, not team mistakes”, Arthur Zwane told the media after their 2-0 away win over Royal AM on the 29 of January, when referring to why the likes of Khune were dropped.
Brandon Petersen has since taken over the reins and kept his third consecutive clean sheet when they beat Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup.
The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper intends to be at the club beyond his current playing role, and it is said that he will assume the goalkeeper coach position, in place of caretaker coach, Aubrey Mathibe, who was a surprise choice for coach Arthur Zwane.
Khune who earned high praises for his consistent performances in his prime has credited his growth to German mentor Raine Dickelenker, who has till this day been his best trainer.
Itumeleng has made nine appearances this season in the DStv Premiership, whilst keeping two clean sheets but conceding 10 goals in the process. The well decorated shot stopper has won two league titles and will most likely take up a position on the bench when they compete against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Sunday in the league.
