City end Chippa Run

Cape Town City ended the Mamilla’s Chippa United run by coming from behind to beat them 2-1 on Tuesday night at the DHL Stadium.

The game was a one sided affair which saw the Citizens have four attempts in the first seven minutes.

Darwin Gonzalez hit the woodwork in the 19th minute, sending the supporters into overdrive. Eight minutes later, Nodada had a chance that was saved by Chippa United goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua.

But then, against the run of play, Ronaldo Maarman was put through on goal in the 30th minute, and he comfortably eased the ball in to give the Chilli Boys the lead.

The Citizens responded with another attempt that was hit by Mduduzi Mdantsane nine minutes later, that also hit the upright. Soon after that, Kajally Drammeh took a shot that was saved by Kazapua.

City came out with a lot more intensity and purpose in the second stanza, searching for the equaliser. Then after numerous chances throughout the game, substitute Khanyisa Mayo popped up with a goal in the 72nd minute, lifting the tie to another level.

The winning goal for City eventually came after constant pressure exerted by the home team, when their skipper Thami Mkhize got onto the end of a free kick that rebounded off the post. His goal brought instant relief that was felt by the entire City in the 83rd minute.

City held on to the lead, and finally got a crucial win at home that had been a long time coming for such an ambitious team.
