Kaizer Chiefs managed to squeeze a late winner against Maritzburg United with a 3-2 score at Harry Gwala Stadium in PSL action on Saturday night.
We go through the most memorable moments in the match and share the best fan views after the game, including a supporter who found a similarity between Chiefs and Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.
Chiefs started the game on fire with a goal after five minutes courtesy of Keagan
Dolly. Chiefs had overturned a Maritzburg corner, as Yusuf Maart picked up a loose ball that was
cleared by Edmilson Dove and released a through ball for Ashley Du Preez who found the
Maritzburg goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner wanting. He capitalized on that to set Dolly in to
break the deadlock.
Amakhosi supporters were granted another celebratory moment in the 10th minute of the first
half, as Saile Basomboli released a shot that found Leaner off his line. Maart controlled the
middle of the park as he won the ball and found the Congolese striker.
Chiefs conceded a corner kick in the 19th minute of the game, in which former Stellenbosch
defender Rafiq De Goede found the back of the net courtesy of a Keagan Ritchie corner kick
assist. Despite, starting the game well, Amakhosi dropped the tempo and Maritzburg capitalized on a
set piece. In the 41st minute, French International Amadou Saukouna found the top left corner to make it 2-2.
The second half started slow, as both teams attempted to control the game. At 62 minutes,
Chiefs could have capitalized on an opportunity from Du Preez. A split pass from Chiefs
playmaker Mduduzi Shabalala found Ashley Du Preez but he could not reach the ball to pull a shot.
Chiefs were presented with another chance in the 68th minute. Shabalala hit his shot over the
bar after a beautiful one-two interchange with Maart in the 18-yard area.
Chiefs fans then grew frustrated as the time started running out without any clear-cut chance. However, in the 74th minute, Du Preez fell in the box from a foul committed by De Goede. The referee pointed to the spot and Maart slotted it home. Chiefs managed to secure the result, walking away with three points.
Despite winning, Chiefs fans have mixed feelings regarding the performance of their team and
how they have been winning their games lately. One of their supporters even felt Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is the right fit for Amakhosi, the way he didn’t accept mediocrity in the 3-3 draw against Southampton on Saturday.
