Former Orlando Pirates star Katlego Mashego has discussed Orlando Pirates’ new signing of veteran target man Ndumiso Mabena. The Buccaneers have announced the return of the 35-year-old player early this month, signing him on a one and half-year deal.
Mashego, a former striker himself, previously played with Mabena for at least two seasons at the Soweto giants, having won the treble in 2010/2011. Mabena went on to win another treble a season later.
Mabena played 21 games at Royal AM last season, scoring only two goals and registered two assists. Mahoota as Mashego was known during his playing days, believes that Mabena will be a good addition to the Pirates squad.
“Mabena trained with Orlando Pirates for a while, even before they won the MTN8. I’m sure the coach kept a close eye on him, and hence they signed him,”
“He is probably a different option to what they currently have. You can’t say that you have many strikers and when someone like Mabena becomes available. He brings a different dimension to the squad that’s why they had to sign him.
“I think they looked it at that way because he brings a different dimension to the team, and he has the experience of winning trophies at Pirates and he knows the team’s culture, he has been there before.
“They probably looked at his experience, him knowing the team and how he differs from other strikers. He will bring a lot to the team.”
The Sea Robbers will face off against the DStv Premiership reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on the 30th of December.
