Former Bafana Bafana Player Nasief Morris has expressed his sentiments on the current SA players. Nasief Morris stated that the current SA players do not have the desire to play abroad because they comfortable playing in SA.
“Currently everybody is comfortable in South Africa, and they don’t want to set their goals higher. If I look back at our generation, we used to aim high, we did not want to play in South Africa only. We wanted to play against the best in the world and that was the dream that we put for ourselves, and we achieved those dreams. I think the generations nowadays, there too much comfortability, where they are comfortable here at home and they don’t want to challenge themselves. They don’t want to put themselves in the shopping window, whether it’s at a small country in Europe where they can put themselves out there and get snatched up by bigger clubs,” Morris said at the Nedbank Cup draw.
Nasief Morris had the opportunity to play abroad during his playing days. He left SA in 2001 to pursue a career in Europe. He spent most of his career in Greece playing for Aris FC and later at Greek giants, Panathinaikos, where he became a household name. Towards the end of his career, he was loaned out Racing Santander in Spain. Morris spent 10 years playing abroad before coming back to SA to spend the latter part of his career at home
Most of the current generation who went abroad have failed to last the distance and they come back to South Africa and that could be one of the factors for Bafana Bafana’s downfall.
