Even though the Glamour Boys haven’t won any major trophy in the last seven seasons. The longest serving goalkeeper and academy graduate Itumeleng Khune could be on his way out at the end of the season. Khune’s contract with the Soweto giants will come to an end in June 2023.
Khune has been part of Kaizer Chiefs family for more than twenty years now. But he was given a chance at the start of the 2007/08 season by coach Muhsin Ertugral. He won 13 major trophies with Chiefs since 2004 and two major individual trophies during Premier Soccer League awards (Player of the Season and Footballer of the season).
In the current Kaizer Chiefs squad Khune is the most decorated player at the club. But negotiations for the renewal of his contract between his agent and the club hasn’t been the talk of the late. In fact, Amakhosi Sporting director Kaizer Jnr Motaung insisted the club is in the building phase and they’re looking to give young players a chance as they build a strong Amakhosi team.
The 35-year-old performance at Amakhosi has been inconsistent despite suffering some injuries. Khune has kept only two clean sheets in eleven appearances he made this season for Amakhosi and he has conceded twelve goals in all competitions. In the last two games, Arthur Zwane has preferred Brandon Peterson who collected five clean sheets in seven matches he played this season.
However, the Soweto giants are interested in signing Richards Bay shot stopper Salim Jamal Magoola. The Uganda international is the second goalkeeper in the DStv Premiership with a lot of clean sheets after Ronwen Williams. He played all the matches for third position Richards Bay this season.
If Amakhosi’s deal to sign Jamal Magoola becomes a success Itumeleng Khune contract with the Glamour Boys is highly unlikely to be renewed because the club will be having four goalkeepers who they can invest on for the longest time.
