Gerald “Jomo” Modabi, is of the opinion that Veli Mothwa’s head has potentially been turned, given his performance in the MTN 8 final against Orlando Pirates.
The Usuthu goalkeeper conceded a goal in the 24th minute from a Monnapule Saleng free kick from a challenging angle, leading to questions about the Bafana international goalkeeper’s positioning, as well as his awareness.
“Complacency, he obviously knows he is in the Bafana squad. With the 14 year experience that I have in football, when players start behaving like that, he is probably speaking to someone, he probably wants to leave,” Gerald Modabi told This Is Football.Africa.
“His body language leaves a lot to be desired, looking at the goal he conceded, I’m still very worried. He is a tall boy, a big boy, he is normally solid, and how he deals with crosses is one of his strengths. To concede a free kick like that, specifically from that angle, is extremely awkward for a goal to go in like that. It worries me, what is he doing, what is he thinking, and maybe he is not applying himself like he used to when he got to AmaZulu.”
Modabi was very concerned about the recent output of Mothwa’s game in recent times, alluding to the fact that he is always in the national team, and knows he’ll be there again. Adding that a drop in performance could maybe be due to clubs circling, or an increase in his wages.
“Maybe he thinks he is the king of the world because maybe his salary was adjusted, I hope it’s not the case, and I hope he continues to repay the club because they signed him when he was a nobody,” added Gerald. “Sometimes, we as players forget who gave us the opportunity when we start receiving a lot of phone calls from the so-called big clubs.”
