Kgaogelo Sekgota joined Kaizer Chiefs from Swallows in July 2021, previously turned out for Bidvest Wits, Vitória Setúbal in the Portuguese top-flight and Lithuanian side Stumbras since emerging from his amateur club Polokwane United.
However, Sekgota has failed to score a single goal for Kaizer Chiefs in 35 appearances spanning over two seasons.
ThisIsFootball.Africa spoke to Junior Khanye, the former Chiefs attacker, as to why Sekgota is unable to find the net.
“He has not been given enough time, there are a lot of things in his game that need to improve, to be honest,” Junior Khanye told Joshua_Journo.
“There was a lot of hype around him when he joined Kaizer Chiefs, he started with promise, but truly speaking he lacks some things in his game. For instance, he needs to find himself in the box most of the time. He needs to play in and around the box more, he needs to play more directly towards the goal posts, then going wide. He is more of a traditional winger, he must improve in that, but make no mistake he’s got the talent. Only thing is that he wasn’t developed properly as a youngster. I keep on crying about this. Because if you are not properly developed, there are a lot of principles that you’ll lack in your game.
Whilst at Swallows FC, Sekgota’s highest goal tally was three goals in 24 appearances, in which 20 were starts. This season he has only made eight starts, with nine games coming off the bench with head coach Zwane using him more as an impact player.
“Firstly, he needs to work on his technique, secondly he needs to find the target and play around the box,” continued Junior Khanye.
His positioning needs to change when the ball is on the right, so that he can find himself in the box. He needs to play more small sided games so that he can be more of a team player. At the moment he is more of an individual. I don’t mind individual players, because I love them, but he needs to get more involved in order for him to score more. He needs to also work on his balance so that he doesn’t fall easily, at his age he shouldn’t be falling that easily. He needs to improve his vision too, knowing where to be and when, seeing and reading the game. Knowing things that the opponent does not see. Sekgoya is very skillful, but he was not properly polished.
“He plays solely with his natural talent, and at Kaizer Chiefs there are different expectations. If you don’t score as a winger, there is a problem because they bought him from Swallows, so he was not developed by them (Chiefs). He has been playing in the DStv Premiership for a while, so he needs to score goals. Other than that, he is a very, very talented player. He’s quick, he has got speed and he can eliminate players, I like that.”
In September last year, Kgaogelo Sekgota was called up to the Bafana Bafana national team squad, so there is no doubt that he has got qualities that can further develop. Whether he’ll have time to do so at Naturena is another question.
This weekend Amakhosi take on Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday at 15:30.
