Kaizer Chiefs Loss a Blessing

Orlando Pirates legend, Gerald “Jomo” Modabi, believes that the Soweto Derby loss against Kaizer Chiefs is a blessing in disguise, as the Buccaneers prepare to take on AmaZulu in the MTN 8 final at Moses Mabhida on Saturday.

Jomo who started his eventful football journey at SuperSport United, goes into the emotions of losing a Derby, but says because of this experience, Pirates will bring the MTN 8 Cup home.

“I think It was good that they lost against Chiefs, going into the cup final,” Gerald Modabi told This is Football.Africa.

“Obviously when it happens you are crushed, because you just lost in the derby. But in hindsight, it comes at a time when they really need a trophy. What better way than to come back with revenge over AmaZulu, especially just after a loss in the derby. It was a blessing in disguise that they lost against Chiefs, and I think they will do very well against Usuthu on Saturday.”

Modabi, who was known for scoring incredible free kicks, says that in a final, the experience of the players comes in handy when navigating tough in-game situations. He also adds that the bulk of the AmaZulu players are individuals who have a point to prove, having had to leave various top teams in order to rekindle their career.

“It’s a matter of what is at stake, what is the bigger prize, and I think right now for Pirates the MTN 8 is more important than winning against Kaizer Chiefs,” continued the former Dynamos midfielder.

“What makes AmaZulu dangerous, is the fact that they’ve got a lot of players from other clubs that are so-called run down players, but they pose a serious threat. These are quality players, like Makhaula who have come through very nicely since Swallows. He has grown and he is a strong character for the club. But never forget the fact that Pirates is a big club, and that will always be an advantage to Orlando Pirates.”
