Willard Katsande returns for his second ‘Kicking With Katsande’s Column in ThisIsFootball.Africa. The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder is not happy about the club’s midfield department, more especially in the defensive midfield position where he played such a big role for the club in his playing days.
Amakhosi have Njabulo Blom, Phathutshedzo Nange and Cole Alexander as their defensive midfielders, but Blom is the one that seems to be making the position his own. Katsande, who is now a Sekhukhune United ambassador, say the club needs someone to compete with the 22-year-old Blom.
“Njabulo is doing well. He is a young star with a lot of potential and the future looks bright for him. But as I said, Chiefs require another player to compete with him and someone who has more experience than him. They require someone who can challenge him in that position.
“If they can get someone whom he can learn from him and challenge him, it will be a great move. He must be challenged so that he does not become too comfortable. The one thing we need to take care of, is he must not be too much comfortable because then he will not grow.
“He needs to know that if he relaxes, there will be someone who will take his position. That is what we must look at it. He must know if he becomes too comfortable, someone will replace him. He requires a challenger so that he will grow.
“All in all, what I’m saying is they need a good strong number six again, yes we have Blom, but I think they need somebody to help him or to challenge him in that position because as much as you want to do well you must have another strong number six to challenge him. Even the big clubs in the world do that.”
One thing is for sure is that if Blom can emulate Katsande’s career at Chiefs, then he will become a massive fan favorite at Chiefs.
