Maboe: A move to Orlando Pirates from Mamelodi Sundowns is ideal

Maboe

At the peak age of 28 and no game time, Lebohang Maboe has become another forgotten face in the star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns squad.

The attacking midfielder joined the Brazilians in 2018 from Maritzburg United, where he was one of their key players.

His Downs career started well under former coach Pitso Mosimane, with his best season being the 2018/19 campaign.

In that season, he made 41 appearances for Downs across all competitions. He managed to score nine goals and provided five assists.

After Mosimane left Downs, Maboe started seeing less game time, with injuries playing a role in his absence from the team.

The situation has become worse for the 28-year-old lately.

Last season he only managed 13 appearances, scoring one goal and assisting with two. In the current campaign, Maboe has played in five matches across all competitions for the Dstv Premiership champions, with one assist to his name, and no goals.

The writing is on the wall for Maboe, and it reads, “Expect no game time any time soon.”

The fact of the matter is

Mamelodi Sundowns are well covered when it comes to the attacking midfield role.

The likes of Marcelo Allende, Neo Maema, Siphelele Mkhulise, Hashim Domingo, and Sipho Mbule have done well for the club, which means there is almost no place for Maboe.

With his talent and experience, Maboe should be seeking a move away from Downs, to get more game time somewhere else, whether on loan or a permanent move.

Sundowns’ biggest rivals, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates can definitely use Maboe services should he be made available.

He can fit perfectly in both teams’ style of play, especially at Pirates.

Amabhakaniya play a fluid passing game injected with a lot of pace, a style of play Maboe will not be lost in.

The attacking midfielder is blessed with speed and excellent technique, with Pirates in short supply when it comes to attacking midfielders, Maboe can be a welcome addition.

ThisIsFootball.Africa will be following Maboe’s situation closely as the season draws to a close.

In a nutshell

There is no reason for Maboe to stay at Downs. The midfielder should be playing regular football to increase his chances of getting back into the national team.

Unfortunately, game time is not something he can expect to get at Sundowns.

Moving on is his only option.
