Maritzburg United have confirmed the appointment of Fadlu Davids as the club’s head coach. He comes in as John Maduka’s successor, who was fired following a string of poor results.

Davids joins the Team of Choice after his last job as an assistant coach at Lokomotiv Moscow was short-lived, where he was involved in just three games. The Capetonian was fired along with head coach Josef Zinnbaeur whom Davids previously worked with at Orlando Pirates.

This will be the second stint for the 41-year-old coach, who managed the club from July 2017 before he was sacked in December 2018. The Cape Town-born tactician led the Team of Choice to the Nedbank Cup Final in 2018, but unfortunately fell short to the now-defunct Free State Stars.

Davids also played for Maritzburg from 2007 and retired at the club in 2012, the same year he was appointed the first team’s assistant coach. He says his understanding of the culture of the club will help him start the ball rolling.

“I am really excited to be back here and having been here as a player, assistant coach, and head coach, I understand the club quite well, and will make it easy for my technical team and players to hit the ground running “explained Davids.

The club’s chairman Farouk Kadodia said, “Fadlu is one of the youngest, brightest coaches in the game, and we are pleased to have been able to bring him back to the Club.”

After the World Cup, Davids will have a colossal task to move the club away from the relegation zone ,as they are currently rooted in the 16th position. Maritzburg are next in action with TS Galaxy on the 30th of December.
