Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has voiced his thoughts after his side secured an away win over Maritzburg United on Tuesday night. The Brazilians trashed the Team of Choice 5-0, returning to winning ways after they lost to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 semi-final second leg over the past weekend.
Haashim Domingo and Cassius Mailula bagged braces while the other goal was scored by Thapelo Morena. Sundowns who were ruthless in front of goal today secured their fifth league win in a row which extended their lead in the DSTV Premiership standings with three points.
Mokwena who was recently named as a sole head coach of the Tshwane giants, insisted it wasn’t an easy game for the champions.
“Not a very easy game but we took our chances, we were aggressive today on transitions, aggressive on regains,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV after the game.
“We showed a lot of hunger today which is very good to show the right mentality, to respect the brand and to respect the club especially after what happened on the weekend.
“Now we just have to stay humble and show the same hunger in the next match. Maritzburg are very difficult to beat, especially here at Harry Gwala, [on] a pitch that suits a low block and the possibilities to spread themselves across the pitch.
“We did very well with our speed of the ball today and the speed without the ball because they are a very good side and don’t take the score as an indication of the level of the opposition.
“We did very well today, now it’s just to maintain and keep the same hunger and keep going.
Mokwena went on to single out some individuals, heaping praise on their remarkable performances on the day.
“They were good, a lot of them were good, Haashim Domingo, Grant Kekana, Rushine [De Reuck] did very well in the moments that he played, Teboho [Mokoena], Allende, probably his best performance today and Cashy [Cassius Mailula] was very good.”
