Mamelodi Sundowns legendary goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene has landed a new role as a goalkeeper coach at the club, according to coach Rulani Mokwena.
Mweene was seen instructing goalkeeper Ronwen Williams during the match, as their main goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson was suspended against Sekhukhune United last week.
The 38-year-old known for his stints at Masandawana and the Zambia national team has not featured in any games this season for the club, despite being one of the four Sundowns registered shots-toppers.
Speaking after their hard-fought 1-0 against Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday, Mokwena has confirmed the veteran’s new role.
“Yes, he’s doubling up into a role that we envisage for him as a long-term position for sure. And he’s going to be doing his coaching badges very soon. He has just applied for that,” Mokwena told reporters after the match.
“And it’s only that natural progression in life when you move, particularly from playing, and then you have a keen interest to be involved in coaching and Kennedy has that.
“He has been an incredible servant for this football club and in South African football. Incredible experience as well, and he has won the CAF Champions League, the Afcon and so there are incredible benefits for the club to inherit in a coaching capacity.
“He did very well today, so congratulations to him for winning his first match on the bench as a goalkeeper coach. We thank him for his contributions.”
