Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has shared how many points his team is hoping to collect in order to qualify for the next round of the CAF Champions League.
Masandawana are currently on top of Group B after winning their first two matches against Al-Hilal and Coton Sport. On Saturday, Sundowns are facing last years CAF Champions League finalists Al Ahly, who already lost their first group stage match against Al-Hilal last week.
Both Sundowns and Al Ahly have met on ten occasions in the Champions League. Al Ahly won four matches while Sundowns won three including their first victory in Cairo stadium against Al Ahly last season. Onyango believes if his team can collect ten or eleven points, they’ll be able to progress on to the next round of the competition even though they want to win all the matches.
“We don’t look at the log, we focus on the process and the process for the club and the technical team is to get on ten or eleven points. But ten points or eleven points guarantees you a qualification to the quarter-finals. Of course we want to win all the games in the group to get momentum going into the quarter-finals,” he said.
“But the most important thing is for the team to qualify first of all to the quarter-finals rather than looking at the position of the club or how many points we have collected so far. It’s very important for us to stay focused on the process which is to qualify for the quarter-finals.”
The eleventh match between both sides will take place in Cairo International Stadium on Saturday evening.
