Percy Tau decides to stay and fight for place at Al Ahly

Percy Tau has chosen to stay and fight for his place at Egyptian giants Al Ahly, rather than be pushed out, just weeks after the Egyptian club parted ways with Pitso Mosimane.

Tau was heavily criticized last year when he opted to leave English Premier League side Brighton & Albion to join Al Ahly, in a move fans slammed as a downgrade. The Bafana Bafana star striker left England after enduring a frustrating spell on the bench at Brighton.

Leading Egyptian journalist, Tarek Talaat told ThisIsFootball.Africa from his base in Cairo, that Tau had chosen to shake off his injury struggles, gain match fitness, and fight for a place at the Africa Club of the Century, rather than run off to a safer club.

“Things have now changed for Percy Tau. I know the club was ready to let him go during the transfer window, but he told management that he wanted to stay. It was his choice to stay at Al Ahly,” he said.

Talaat said Tau, who has started training with the rest of the Al Ahly squad, was slowly overcoming his injury problems.

“He is without a doubt a classy player.  In fact, one of the best in Egypt, if not the best. The problem of course has been his injuries. I am certain we will see his class soon,” he said.

The news of Tau staying at Al Ahly will certainly not impress Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who suggested that his star player consider a move away from the Egyptian super club in January.

“His not 100% now, yes he’s fit, but he does not have enough minutes. He has to play. Again, let’s hope if he doesn’t succeed and get his position in Al Ahly, in January he finds another team where he can play,” Broos said this week.

Tau was a notable omission on Wednesday, when Broos announced his Bafana Bafana squad to face Mozambique and Angola at Mbombela Stadium during the international break.
