This year’s MTN 8 final was not a classic. But after a good first half showing, Pirates held firm against a rejuvenated Amazulu in the second half, to eventually run out as 1-0 winners, thanks to an outstanding free kick from the in-form Monnapule Saleng.
Amazulu had a poor first half, but did much better in the second half, however they failed to capitalize on their chances. In was in the second half that the partnership of Sphesihle and Maduna came to life, and caused problems for Pirates.
Captain fantastic Makhaula solidified the middle of the park, with help from Mobara at the back. However, Pirates showed their experience in absorbing the pressure of Amazulu.
Amazulu Romain Coach Folz believes his side could have done better in the game, as they were becoming complacent in key areas.
“We had a poor first half, it was much better in the second half. We were able to be on the ball more and create some chances. I regret the fact that the game was stopped for 12 minutes, but there is nothing we can do about that though. I feel either way we could have done better as we were not active enough and we did not try to create many chances in the first half. Next time when we play against Orlando Pirates, we will try to be the better team.
“The lesson I am taking from this game is that we must learn to be more consistent in our performance. We cannot afford to play one-half like we did today, unfortunately, it was easy to see. It will take some time to fix because the physical aspect also plays a part, but we will learn and rectify,” he said.
