The level of the PSL has been under scrutiny as it has not produced the quality that the national team deserves. As a result, it is one of many reasons that Bafana Bafana have been struggling to qualify for the FIFA World Cup since 2002.
The PSL is amongst the top 3 leagues in Africa and is ranked in the top 10 best leagues in the world. However, that has not been seen in the national team’s progress in competitive matches.
One of South Africa’s best players, Themba Zwane has said that the lack of positive results in the national team is caused by a lack of experience. He reckons that PSL teams need to compete in the Champions League. The Champions League equips players with exposure and that exposure can reflect positively on Bafana Bafana.
“We need to push ourselves as current players, for us to compete when in the national team. We need more teams to play Champions League so that we can get used to that level. If you watch Morocco, some of the players in their national team, we play against them in the Champions League. We just need more teams competing in the Champions League, so we can get used to that exposure,” he said during the Philly’s Games launch.
Mamelodi Sundowns is currently the only team that is competes regularly in the Champions League. The likes of Chiefs, Pirates and SuperSport have failed to achieve any continental success for an extended period now.
The North African teams dominate the continental trophies and its only Mamelodi Sundowns that put up any resistance to that domination.
