With the league title out of their reach, Orlando Pirates have set their sights on the second spot.
Their 2-0 win on Saturday night against Marumo Gallants means they are right on course, and their left winger, Vincent Pule, has made his club’s intentions clear.
“At the moment, we have to make sure we become consistent and take one game at a time. Consistency is very vital at this time…we want to gain more momentum. As a team we want to play in the Champions League next season. We want to make sure that we go there. We are running our own race and we’re not focused on what other teams are doing,” Pule told SowetanLIVE.
After a disappointing three match losing streak that saw them scoring just one goal, with five conceded, things looked bleak for amaBhakaniya, with second spot nothing but a dream.
But they have managed to turn things around, winning their last three games, scoring an impressive nine goals, and conceding just two.
Their recent form has seen them moving up to 4th on the log, behind the stubborn Richards Bay and Supersport United.
But what has inspired the Bucs turn around?
The arrival of Scott Chickelday, their strikers coach has been credited with the change of fortunes at Orlando Pirates.
Before his arrival, Pirates could not find their way to the promised land, the back of the net, that is.
Lately though, they have been scoring with ease, and if they can keep their scoring boots on, the Champions League spot will remain a reality.
If Jose Riveiro’s words are anything to go by, the belief seems to be there.
“We have at this moment many players in a very good form, in a very good moment, which is very good for the team, the competition during the week is tough and if you want to be on the field you really have to deserve it.
“I was not lying, I was not worried. I was upset, disappointed sometimes. We tried to make sure during the week that we help the players to arrive in the game in a better position where they can fight for the victory,” he told Supersport TV.
“We do it every week, we try to make sure we create more chances than the opponent, it’s not always possible but that’s the idea.
“Then our capacity to execute in the last third, which is the most difficult thing in this sport, was not the best sometimes but we didn’t stop, we started again.
“We continue trusting and now we’re collecting more goals and obviously more points as well.”
