With the January transfer window set to re-open shortly. Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho is one of the players who might revive their football careers somewhere.
Mathoho, who is affectionately known as Tower, has been struggling with game time since Arthur Zwane has been appointed as the head coach of Kaizer Chiefs in May 2022. Tower hasn’t started a match for Amakhosi this season in their DStv premiership campaign. As a matter of fact, the Soweto giants have used all their centre-backs in more than one match except Mathoho and Austin Dube.
Zwane has emphasised the strong competitions for places in his team and stated that his technical team will always consider the best centre back pairing.
“There is competition for places. We’ll always look for the best central pairing that can also be able to give us the balance when it comes to our full-backs because we also want to attack as a team,” Zwane told the media in the pre Carling Black Label Cup briefing where Mathoho was voted by fans to start the match.
The 32-year-olds contract with Kaizer Chiefs is set to expire in June 2023. Meaning, the defender can sign a pre-contract with any team in January if Chiefs have not yet given him a contract extension. With the Glamour boys showing interest in Luke Fleurs, Mathoho possibilities of staying at the Naturena based club are slim.
Currently, it is unknown whether Chiefs will release Mathoho or extend his contract as they tried to rebuild their team under Zwane.
Last season, the Bafana international played 1 594 minutes for Chiefs in all competitions and scored once when Chiefs beat Pirates 2-1 at FNB stadium. He won two league titles since he joined Chiefs in 2012.
