Cape Town City have released Mpho Makola after spending 4 seasons with the Cape side. The 36-year-old midfielder had five months left on his contract after penning a yearlong deal at the start of this campaign.
Makola’s contract would have ended in June, however the Citizens opted to end his contract prematurely. The former Pirates midfielder has been used sparingly this season, only managing nine appearances with only one assist in the Dstv Premiership and 15 appearances in all competitions.
It was reported that the club gave him a release letter on Monday (30 January 2023) it’s unclear why the decision was taken as he had five months left on his deal.
The 36-year-old player only eleven times, came on as a substitute seven times and been on the bench four times for Cape Town City, and not making the squad five times. This has been the worst season of his career so far.
However, he possesses amazing skillsets bagged with huge experience and as a free agent, he should have no trouble finding a club. The attacking midfielder can be utilized in the attacking midfield position and on the wing.
However, his age might be against him as he hits 37 years in May. That might restrict his options, with clubs opting for younger players these days.
